This independent film seems to have many mood swings, turning it into a real challenge to get into. It didn't matter to me that it didn't have professional actors (or at least ones familiar to me), or even that it's depressing dealing with the sudden death back to back of the parents of two children. They have to deal with children services, unfortunately placed in the hands of an alcoholic child protection services worker, are separated and ultimately decide to run off to the wilderness together. But that's not it. Not only are they being searched for by the bureaucrats but stalked by a child killer.

The first 20 minutes set up to film beautifully especially when the parents tell their children that they'll always have their sibling to look after the other. You begin to wonder if this had ties with some religious group, but other subplots prove that not to be the case. Why is the caseworker an responsible drunk? The audience gets no real information on her other than the fact that she's embittered and keeps a bottle of booze in her desk at work. Certainly some of the beauty of nature in those later sequences is beautiful, but the film is extremely cynical and angry. The acting is serviceable but not really convincing, and the pacing thanks to scenes with little dialogue really drags.
