Good one. Different, but good

I do believe the plot of Saturday Fiction is fiction, apart from the historical events punctuated by the movie as well, but when you have Gong Li and you throw a couple of good European actors into the mix and Mark Chao and Joe Odagiri it's pretty good fiction. I kinda hated the prolonged blood bath towards the end, as it was a full tonal shift from what the movie was before that, but I guess people like to do that in spy movies. The BW looks good but I would have preferred full colour. When you have such a beautiful, vibrant woman like Gong Li and Republican era China it's a shame not to give us the full visual experience. The sets look amazing but there's only so much imagination can do with BW. The camera is shaky a few times. Close-ups are good and we get plenty of those. I still don't get the BW choice but...

Brilliant Spy Story

The critics who didn't like this film should take a second look. This is one of the best espionage movies of all time. It can be hard to decipher who is working for whom, but that is likely true of real spies. It has strong echoes of Casablanca but it also illuminates contemporary politics. The cinematography is gorgeous. The acting is tremendous. A must see.
