Pure entertainment on sexy comedy oriented!!

My early interest in this peppery comedy was in the soundtrack that includes a heavy version of ELO's Evil Woman, thus I enjoy the picture as well, the leading trio Biiggs, Zahn and Jack Black were enough funny to hold us at chair, a crude comedy with good moments really, maybe driven to teenage audience was prime target, nevertheless it also is palatable for adults without doubt, the eye candy Amanda Peet was pretty sexy as dominant woman, Steve Zahan was perfect as the brain behind of all things, Jack Black a sort of dumb guy who discover to be a G.A.Y character, when he asking for to Zahn be his man is too hilarious, it's probable is a physical comedy neither, has many scenes with falls and some stumbles, rocked by veteran singer Neil Diamond soft songs, he also acting as himself, provides a romantic atmosphere at ending, having fun!!!

Dude, if you get the nachos stuck together, that's one nacho.

Steve Zahn, Jack Black, and Jason Biggs play Wayne, J.D., and Darren, three good friends who, in addition to their day jobs, perform as a Neil Diamond tribute band. Awkward nice guy Darren (Biggs is certainly one of those actors who's cornered the market on this sort of character) strikes out with women. Then, a cold-hearted beauty named Judith (Amanda Peet) decides to pursue a relationship with him, but she just basically enjoys completely dominating and manipulating him. She drives a wedge in the friendship of these three guys, and helps to break up the band, so Wayne and J.D. decide to kidnap her. Wayne also works overtime to set Darren up with the high school hottie (adorable Amanda Detmer) he never got up the nerve to ask out. The catch: Detmer is now in training to become a nun.

This viewer was surprised that he enjoyed this as much as he did, but "Saving Silverman" does deliver a lot of genuine laughs. It manages to play in the "gross-out", absurdist sandbox popularized by the Farrelly brothers in their movies, without ever getting too mean-spirited or ugly. It has a lot of outrageous moments as it decides to leave reality far behind, and is just good fun in general.

The talented comedy cast plays all of their roles to the hilt. Zahn in particular just grabs the bull by the horns and goes for broke. Neither Wayne nor J.D. are particularly bright, but Wayne is definitely more of a "take charge" type of guy. Peet plays the gorgeous antagonist for everything that the role is worth. And she's *smart*, figuring out how she can manipulate Wayne & J.D. as well. Detmer is extremely engaging as the gal with whom Darren would obviously be better off. And the late, great military man turned character actor R. Lee Ermey is a riot as the Coach, with some of the best lines in the picture. Diamond gives a capable, self-aware performance as himself, figuring in a very bright wrap-up. (Not to mention an upbeat end credits sequence where the main cast perform on stage with him.)

"Saving Silverman" is deliberately goofy, undemanding, lively entertainment. Far from "great cinema", but sometimes a fun, no-brainer, over the top comedy can be ideal for brightening ones' mood.

Available in both the PG-13 theatrical version and a raunchier R-rated cut, complete with nudity.

Seven out of 10.

A wonderful underrated comedy!

This is one of my favorite comedies of all time. I remember watching it a lot on TV, and never got tired of it. I've always liked Jason Biggs, Steve Zahn and specially Jack Black, so to have a comedy where they team up, to me it was nothing short of awesome! So Darren (Biggs), Wayne (Zahn) and JD (Black) have been friends since they were in school, they have a Neil Diamond cover band together, they share an enthusiastic fanaticism over Diamond himself and his music. Darren one day finds himself wondering if he'll ever find love, and thinks about the one girl that could have been but never was, Sandy (Amanda Detmer). Wayne and JD then encourage him to find someone; they see an attractive woman (Amanda Peet) entering the bar they were in, so Wayne arranges for Darren to approach her. Long story short, Darren and Judith end up together, but she just uses him, toys with him and Darren just consents and even justifies every discourteous action she pulls on him. She makes him give up the Neil Diamond cover band, even burns his records, and forbids him to hang out with Wayne and JD. What a harpy, right? Well, after coming up with different unsuccessful options, they decide to kidnap Judith and make it look like she left Darren, and later died; so Darren could pursue a different relationship without any guilt. Wayne orchestrates everything so Darren and Sandy who just moved back to town can be together.

In my opinion, from the minute Wayne and JD start trying out things in order to get Judith to dump Darren the movie gets hilarious and ludicrous. My favorite scenes are the one where Judith psychoanalyzes JD and makes him realize he is gay, and when he reveals this fact to Wayne so casually. Every scene where their old coach (the great R. Lee Ermey) appears is pure comedy gold. Seriously the man just steals every scene he's in. Jack Black and Steve Zahn's chemistry is another reason why this movie is so funny. They made the script work through their comedic timing and overall delivery of their lines. Jason Biggs is great as the timid, nice and somewhat emasculated lead; he really knows how to pull this kind of characters off. Amanda Peet also did a terrific job as the controlling and manipulating femme that steals Darren's kind heart.

There are tons of funny scenes in this movie; I just couldn't understand why somebody wouldn't laugh at this great fun film. If you want something similar to this, I suggest you Tomcats which also came out in 2001. There's something special about comedies made in the 00s; I'm probably biased because of nostalgia factor, I don't know. But I know that you will have a lot of fun with Saving Silverman, I guarantee!
