Plot summary

In 1993, Washington State voters passed the three-strikes law and sent children to prison for life without parole. We feared these children as irredeemable superpredators. Our fear was wrong, but in 2020, sixteen states continue to keep children in prison for life. "Since I Been Down" shows the power of these children, now adults nearly forty years later, creating a true path to justice and healing from inside their prison walls.

Excellent Documentary

It does point to many inequalities my only complaint is that is misses some very important issues. Everyone can change but an initial heavy sentence is important for certain crimes which should be evaluated later down the road. The documentary falsely claims there is no parole in WA state and that is incorrect. I assure you there has been Parole in WA. No parole after 3 class A or B Felony violent offenses is 3 strikes which is fair in many cases. People need to be held accountable and many are not these days. Now days they blame the gun and just take more rights away from law abiding citizens. As far as Life without Parole sentences there are certain situations that is warranted. Gary Ridgeway should be put to death but bear minimum he should NEVER see the light of day again.

Educational and heart-wrenching

My mom made me watching this movie for her birthday, and I'm so glad I did. I've long known that the US criminal justice system is unjust and cruel, but this documentary really opened my eyes. Especially regarding the prevalence of gangs in the 90s, it gave me a much better understanding of how children got caught up in that lifestyle. I really believe it should be required viewing because this system is not serving our country well. It doesn't make us safer, it increases suffering and robs young people of their future.
