A Relevant but Flawed Portrait of Radicalization
Unimaginative, boring, ignorant
This movie takes place in mainly Copenhagen, Denmark. It is clear that the movie works as a societal critique and a potential "dark future current trends might lead to", albeit being very bad at painting that image. The director of this movie clearly has no insight in politics, the general right wing nor the far right.
About the plot itself:
The movie is slow and boring. The plot barely moves beyond the first "chapter" if you will. Spoilers ahead.
After the first section of the movie it's purely about a PET (Danish intelligence services) agent of immigrant background regretting his choices, as he realises that Denmark basically is progressing towards a nazi-like society (despite not showing ANYTHING of the sort, beyond violent attacks).
This kind of vague comparison with nazism is extremely worrying, and tells a story of nothing. Among nazis there is an ideological goal beyond "immigrants are bad and should be deported", which the movie shows nothing of. Its main point is basically: Don't do terrorism because terrorism can lead to nazis. That's the moral of the story boiled down, which is not only a bad but also extremely ignorant take.
Besides, there has been zero right wing attacks at any point as result. The director, if I recall correctly, even expressed "surprise" at how close his creation was to reality. In which way? None. There has to this date not been any organized right wing/anti immigration groups inciting direct violence and especially not of the organized kind. The societal critique thus is rendered completely fictional, useless and meaningless. There has been several attempts at islamic terror in the country of Denmark, but still not a single "nazi" (similar or affiliated) response or attack whatsoever.
An interesting note is also that the film depicts said PET agent's family getting directly attacked by some of these people, resulting in acid being used in his wife's face. This is especially interesting, as this is moreso what you see from leftists and immigrants use in this country, in relation to acts of violence, not right wing groups - showing how little insight the makers of the film have in the modern political situation in the country.
Watching this in 2025 (when the film is set) will be exceptionally laughable, not only due to the poor plot, but also because it has nothing to do with reality whatsoever except for the location.
In short:
The plot is basic, boring and slow. The societal critique attempted in the movie falls completely flat, as it has no basis in reality whatsoever.
