An uneven historical film about the history of Sweden and Denmark when they were still part of the Kalmar Union.

In 16th-century Sweden, in 1520, the failure of the Danish King Christian's military campaign against Sweden has proven devastating. The head of the Swedish state, Sten Sture (Adam Pålsson), has emerged victorious from the battle, but only briefly. King Christian II (Claes Bang) of Denmark insists on regaining the Swedish crown. Along with his powerful army of mercenaries, Christian insists on recovering the Swedish crown. He decides to advance toward Stockholm, leaving a trail of destruction and death in his wake. The family of Anne (Sophie Cookson) and Freja Eriksson (Alba August) will be among the victims, but they are not left out and decide to take action and carry out a ruthless revenge. They end up in Stockholm, where they are drawn into a political power struggle between Sweden and Denmark which culminates in a mass execution, taking place the so-called ¨The Stockholm Bloodbath¨ . Old grudges never die ! . Don't fight with the Danes !.Battles and palace intrigues in this Nordic blockbuster, an epic film about two women bent on revenge in 16th-century Sweden, invaded by Denmark. Mainly dealing with Anne and Freja who seek revenge on the men who murdered their family. There is a spectacular reconstruction of historical events, lavishly and colorfully photographed, Developing in a style very similar to that of the film ¨Brian Helgeland's A knight's tale¨ (2001) . It is an epic/adventure film that has no much historical perspective in which elements of the present are mixed with the past and what it only seeks is enjoyment and full-throttle fun. That is why it shamelessly combines the period setting with contemporary music, resulting in an exciting adventure with extravagant overtones and romantic touches. However, it is carried away by some ridiculous situations, such as the inclusion of some modern dances, or the exaggerated and absurd interpretation of some main characters, so King Christian II himself is portrayed sometimes ironically, other times comically or ridiculously, as well as the overwhelming gesticulation of the bad guy on duty, with some poses that say it all. The motion picture was professional but unevenly directed by MIikael Hafstrom. Director Hafstrom was nominated for Oscar in his film "Escape". Mikael is an expert on terror and sinister atmospheres as proved in " Drowning ghost", "Evil" , "The rite" , ¨Slingshot¨, and his most successful movie, "1408". " Stockholm Bloodbath" rating: 5.5/10, acceptable and passable, but no notable.Although it hasn't much historical perspective, some historical events, elements and characters appear, such as: In 1517, a conflict broke out in Sweden between Regent Sten Sture the Younger (Adam Pålsson) and Archbishop Gustav Trolle; the former defended Swedish independence, while the latter supported the Kalmar Union. King Christian II of Denmark (Claes bang) and Norway took advantage of this conflict to intervene militarily and claim his right to the Swedish throne. However, his intentions were unsuccessful when he was defeated at the Battle of Brännkyrka; where, however, he managed to take six prominent Swedes, including Gustav Vasa, prisoner and imprison them in Denmark. In 1519, Christian assembled a large army of mercenaries and, with the support of the Pope, who had excommunicated Sten Sture and granted Christian the right to enter the war, invaded Sweden again in January of that same year. Christian's army defeated the Swedes at the Battle of Åsunden, where Sten Sture himself was mortally wounded, and later at the Battle of Tiveden, after which Christian became ruler of all of Sweden. In March, Christian was recognized as sovereign by several Swedish nobles. The city of Stockholm was still defended by Sten Sture's widow, Christina Gyllenstierna, who finally capitulated on September 5. On November 4, 1519, he was crowned king by Archbishop Gustav Trolle (Jakob Oftebro) . On the advice of Trolle and some other members of his council, Christian accused many followers of Sten Sture of heresy. He imprisoned them on November 8, 1519, without allowing them the right to a legal trial. He then ordered them executed in what is known to history as the Stockholm Bloodbath. With these cruel actions, Christian intended to demonstrate the enforcement of laws and justice, but in reality he sought to eliminate his opponents. Under the false pretext that he was carrying out papal orders, he dedicated himself to persecuting, committing acts of violence, and executing his detractors throughout Sweden (including Finland). Around 600 people, including children, fell victim to his cruelty (Christina Emily Beecham) , along with other noble ladies, were imprisoned and sent to Denmark. For these actions, Christian was remembered in Sweden as Christian the Tyrant. Later on, there took place, The Revolt of the Swedes. Popular discontent soon arose in Sweden, culminating in an uprising in February 1521 aimed at removing Christian from the territory. In August of that same year, the rebels elected Gustav Vasa as regent of the kingdom.

Don't Expect a Historically Accurate Movie

Mildly entertaining movie, better than many B-grade films. However, the dialogue is modern day, rather than period accurate, which makes it out of place, as is some of the music and dance sequences. There is a lot of strange split screen editing that just doesn't fit. The attempts at humor fall flat, as does the movies attempt to made the female leads into heroic avengers.

Bloody Swedish Saga

Mikael Håfström's "Stockholm Bloodbath" is a violent historical epic inspired by the infamous 16th-century massacre. The film attempts to weave a tale of revenge through the eyes of two sisters caught in a brutal power struggle between Sweden and Denmark. While it delivers on gore and features stylish cinematography and impressive costumes, critics often note its tonal inconsistencies, frequently veering between a serious historical drama and a misplaced dark comedy. The narrative can feel overstuffed with characters and subplots, sometimes losing sight of its central protagonists' emotional journey. Is it worth watching? For those who appreciate historical epics with plenty of action and a high body count, it might be worth a watch, especially for the strong female performances. However, be prepared for a tonally messy experience with an often convoluted plot.
