Jai Bhavani Jai Shivaji

Tanhaji The Unsung Warrior review :Our school history textbooks have reduced most of our real valiant heroes to a footnote, Netaji (Bose) ho ya Tanhaji. Hence, whatever I knew about the great Maratha warrior Tanhaji Malusare was from Amar Chitra Katha (comics) I grew up on.Tanhaji was a trusted lieutenant of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj who won the much coveted Kondhana fort from clutches of the evil Aurangzeb by using his pet ghorpad (monitor lizard) to scale the seemingly impregnable fort and sacrificed his life to conquer it.The film delves deeper in to this incident and highlights the Maratha valour which we saw recently in Ashutosh Gowariker's sincere take on the third battle of Panipat (2019). And ofcourse, Bal Shivaji (1982) which I saw and admired as a school kid. After all, Maratha period is a slice of history more potent and pertinent today than Emperor Jehangir's fictional love story called Mughal E Azam (1960) or the highly distorted Jodhaa Akbar (2008) - two films lapped up by the then paying audience.Tanhaji commences with the brave warrior origins, goes on to explore his brotherly bonding with Chatrapati Shivaji and then proceeds to narrate the fate of Kondhana fort guarded by Udaybhan Singh for Aurangzeb. The strategic fort is the key to South India dominance and hence, needs to be recaptured. Tanhaji offers to help Shivaji Maharaj in this mission...Assuredly, two immortal lines - "Aadhi lagna Kondhanyacha mag majhya Raybaa cha (First we win Kondhana then marriage of my son Raybaa)" and "Gad aala pan sinha gela (We won the fort but lost the lion)" raise the required salute of honour and ceetis in the cinema halls.Director Om Raut shows flair for historicals after debuting with the well made Marathi film 'Lokmanya : Ek Yug Purush' (2015). With Tanhaji, he has got a bigger budget and made the best out of it. Truly, the VFX and 3D are one of the best seen in Bollywood. The battle scenes are brilliantly executed and Raut gives an interesting twist to the ghorpad angle.Of the cast, Ajay Devgn - Saif Ali Khan jodi works wonder yet again after their successful turn so far in Kachche Dhaage (1999) and Omkara (2006). They are simply outstanding in their roles. Kajol has a small role of Tanhaji's wife and nails it easy. Sharad Kelkar is convincing as Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.Tanhaji is the first of the unsung heroes series which Ajay Devgn wants to develop as a franchise. It is a great initiative and something worth subscribing for. Watch Tanhaji today with kids in tow!Jai Bhavani. Jai Shivaji!!

Okayish

Don't believe the rave reviews - this is an okay movie at best. First of all, most people don't know history and that a lot of the plot is fiction. Secondly, the VFX is terrible. Have you seen good Hollywood movies?? Please don't call this good CGI. It's terrible - I felt like it was a video game. Third, like all other Bollywood war movies, it's just so black and white. The enemy and the Mughals are always bad and the heroes are 100% purity and valour. Real life isn't like that. First of all, Udaybhan was a Rajput- and even though he allied with the Mughals for strategic reasons, he did not dance like a savage with them. Oh lord. The action sequences too, are sometimes a bit too much. The initial sequence of them going down on ropes - oh come on. I am a Maratha and I love history- but this is not how you portray it.

However, the movies isn't overly long or boring. It's watchable.
