Blabbings of Bananas

Peaches was somewhat popular during the brief Electroclash movement that emerged in dance music, towards the late 90's. This was a retrograde step in terms of electronic music production which is generally obsessed with futurism. However electroclash looked back to the 80's and sounded primitive compared to your average house or techno track. However unlike the majority of dance musicians, Peaches was more of a traditional songwriter. In that she wrote lyrics, which is what made her stand out. And this is the rub. Because the music itself wasn't that interesting, other things were thrown into the mix to make it so. So she was one of the first women to combine political activism with electronic music so explicitly. And to be fair quite crassly. These are the kind of people who are obsessed with their own identity and wear slogan T Shirts to offend people, then complain they are treated "differently". The telling line from the documentary is "we don't hire the best people for the job, we hire who we will get on with best". What this attitude has lead to is a fracturing of the music scene based on politics, which frankly the majority don't care about. And its on show here. I had no idea she was still performing, as her show used to be about sex and she is much older now so that no longer sells as well. There are some interesting sections of this documentary, but many people will simply tune out because they have had enough of gender identity politics. And adults aren't exactly shocked by a woman swearing on droning on about sex because they think its "empowering". The music is second rate so most of the performances are not that interesting. So of course off come the clothes. I'm sure it has its audience but it won't be based on quality of the music, it will be people who agree with her politics. Which is no way to be a musician.

Fantastic Peaches!

It's a very intermate documentary! They use a lot of Super 8 footage and just personal videos from her life. I did not know so many things that come to light here like that she worked with children, singing and playing a guitar before and when she decided to try this musician stuff out.

We follow here on an 20 year anniversary tour for her debut album, Teaches Of Peaches that came out in 2002. The highlight being one in Berlin, where she lived just before she went back home to Toronto to make the album. It's a ride! I had forgotten the hair-costumes but that showed me a bit of how much influence she has had because on Doja Cat tour, earlier this year, I saw nearly an copycat of that outfit in an Youtube video. It's a flashback to a time where she was shock-punkrock, that is much wider today. She said that she walked on audiences on all the performances and it's beautiful that a 56 year old icon does not give AF. That image is so like Iggy Pop.
