Plot summary

Pedro travels from Spain to Argentina for a vacation at his uncle's home, where he meets Maxi again, a childhood friend. Maxi is surprised when he finds out Pedro is gay. When Maxi finds his ex-girlfriend is also there, he asks Pedro to pretend to be his boyfriend to win her back. Pedro accepts the game, unaware of the dangers of playing with love.

Typical Berger, desire dripping from the screen

I really have missed Marco Berger. And although his filmography states that he's almost every second year present with a new movie, I still need more of his creations. "Astronaut Lovers" is actually different from his latest movies. The signature male gaze of Berger's is absent throughout the whole entirety of this movie. There is a layer missing from this script, because the story is completely different. It's more of a movie about desire and the desire that lingers in the silence. In this, the two protagonists know everything there is to know about the other. So there's no point in lingering in the male gaze, it's more about the slow-burn of them developing a relationship. And it is absolutely slow and absolutely burning. And by the end, the viewer cannot feel comfortable enough, as of to know how this story will end, there's nothing in its entirety that can make you certain of the ending. Marco Berger is well known for his slow-burns, desire dripping from all of his frames. He sure does this wonderfully in this movie, and he delivers another gay gem in "Austonaut Lovers". I simply can't get enough of him.

The Astronaut Banter

This drama rom-com is so unnecessarily long. I mean, I don't mind watching their flirtatious banter for the first 10 minutes. But after they kept talking about it for hours?! I'll say that it's unnecessary to keep those sexual jokes on repeat. So even though it has a good ending, I won't rate it higher than 6. Cause I felt the boredom while watching it for nearly 2 hours.

Simply excellent - a step forward in Berger's career.

It is difficult to describe this film, as it was excellent in its simplicity. I feel that it was very much what Berger does, and at the same time it departed from his traditional films to present something better and more positive.Of course Berger is a filmmaker more focused on everyday life than in specific events, so people who need a plot rich in action may find it boring. For others, like myself, there is profound beauty in 'life as it is'. So the plot is really fantastic in its capacity to contribute to a great film in spite of its simplicity.Another point is that his films are essays on sexuality and gender, and those dimensions are very much nested in local cultures, so this is much better understood by fellow urban Latin American viewers like myself.In that sense, I think that the development of the two main characters, in their psychological complexity, was also a great accomplishment. They are a delight. Moreover, without affecting the plot's simplicity, the dialogues are charming - humorous and very intelligent, and the acting of the two leads is phenomenal. All this gets integrated into a more mature film of this author, one that, despite the sexual content of conversations, is still deeply romantic, producing a great romantic comedy delivering a message that even today is somewhat avant-garde.
