Michael de Jong was a police informant and a collector of knives. He was written out of the will by the rich victim and received a Gouden Kalf (Dutch Oscar) in the name of the actor who portrayed him.
It's one of the many cases in the Netherlands where an innocent person was convicted based on assumptions and evidence that is very questionable. Lucia de Berk, the Paskamermoord, Ina Post, and the Schiedammer parkmoord are proven to be miscarriages of justice, and that's just the tip of the iceberg.
This movie does not show you who the real killer is but tries to convince the audience that the killer is innocent and that the financial advisor of the victim is the one who killed her, while his motive is unbelievable. The real killer had a motive, collected knives as a hobby, had a bad reputation, and most importantly, he was a police informant. That's one of the reasons they convicted an innocent person.

Miscarriages of Justice
A film that makes you angry (and that's what's great about it).
This film is based on true events. Through the eyes of the media we see how an innocent couple is falsely accused by the media of a hideous murder. A journalist tries to show the audience their innocence. Balanced, well researched and told with a certain panache, this is a movie that can compete with The Insider, Spotlight or Zodiac. Very interesting: polster and pragmatic entrepreneur Maurice de Hond, a man who strangely enough used to be taken extremely seriously by the Dutch media bobo's is only shown in archive footage, but is the antagonist is this tale about fake news. This surefooted movie deserves a bigger, international audience... and some awards.
