Plot summary

Alfred Carlton Gilbert invented the Erector Set and is trying to get it onto the toy shelves of the country. A.C. is startled to be summoned to the White House, where top officials ask him to convert the toy factory into a weapons manufacturing company for the duration of the war. "No" is really not an option, for fear of being labeled unpatriotic so the switch is made. Later, government officials ask A.C. to be their spokesman for a campaign to avoid "toy giving" for the coming holidays and buy war bonds instead. With a young son himself, who looks forward to Christmas like any other child, what will A.C. do this time?

Another Goof

The movie was fine and enough has been said that I can't provide anything new. However, there was another goof not identified. Near the end of the movie where the Marine sentries can be seen, they are wearing chevrons that include the crossed rifles...the crossed rifles are obtained when the Marine is promoted to Lance Corporal...these didn't come into being until about 1959! Also, one Marine was wearing a white hat with a black EG&A emblem...I don't believe the black emblem was authorized with the dress blues, rather a gold one was. That was WWI, so I could be wrong, but I'd challenge it. I could probably challenge the ribbons but would need to see them in more detail...but first guess is they might be inaccurate or incomplete.

Not bad

The thing that sticks out most about this movie is not the story (which is pretty straight forward) but the surprise acting of Jason Alexander, who is of course best known for his role as George on Seinfeld. In this movie, Jason plays A.C. Gilbert the famous toymaker of the early 1900's. He may not be as funny as George, but he's smarter, sweeter and has a big heart. I couldn't see Jason in a role like this, until I actually saw it, and it made me realize that George Costanza was not the only character out there for him. My family was also impressed with his performance, but they agreed that the movie was a little slow and sappy in places. Still, this is a fantastic Christmas movie with some real history behind it, not to mention a great message about what toys can do for the mind of a growing child. After seeing this, I'd like to see Jason Alexander in more dramatic roles in the future.
