Plot summary

A classic of the silent age, this film tells the story of the doomed but ultimately canonized 15th-century teenage warrior. On trial for claiming she'd spoken to God, Jeanne d'Arc is subjected to inhumane treatment and scare tactics at the hands of church court officials. Initially bullied into changing her story, Jeanne eventually opts for what she sees as the truth. Her punishment, a famously brutal execution, earns her perpetual martyrdom.

A milestone in film history

Technically interesting, but lacking in storyline - they could have built the tension much better, I think. Maybe it would work better if I cared about religion. Also the recently invented close-ups were taken a bit too far, as it was difficult to tell who was who with all the monk men looking so similar.Still, some neat images in this one, and definitely an important work in the history of cinema. Recommended as a study of advances in early filmmaking.

A brief description of the beautiful

Speechless. What about the angular planes of the camera, the backgrounds, the takes that complement the true dialogues, the painful features, the pleasant combination of fact and art, and liturgical music? Watching this open leaves aside the simple fact of absorbing historical content, but it becomes, at the same time, an act of understanding the soul Carl T. Dreyer and especially Jeanne D'arc.
