Welcome Back to The Days of Yore.....Well At Least The 80's

I couldn't help it, even though I knew what I was getting myself into. Being a teenager in the early 80's, I grew up with the low budget sword and sorcery flicks. Deathstalker, Ator, Barbarian Queen, Amazons and several others. I've always enjoyed those "films", no matter how bad. After watching this one, all of those titles flashed into my head. I would compare this one to those. Just a little more modern day cheese.

Is it a good movie, no. If you like those bad 80's titles, you may be able to make it through this one. If your taste is not those type of movies, don't watch it. It's always good to see name actors in these type of movies. Go through the motions and cash the check. Easy money.

Surprisingly enjoyable

I appear to have missed a couple of sequels along the way but no matter. This is part four and surprisingly enjoyable, at least on par with the sword and sorcery flicks of the 1980s. It has a wealth of action portrayed in a jokey, stunt-filled HERCULES: THE LEGENDARY JOURNEYS kind of way. No-name leads, but a lot of old-timers making welcome appearances in support, not least Rutger Hauer, Lou Ferrigno and Michael Biehn. It's also well-paced and is well shot throughout. Cheesy and with poor FX, but I expected nothing else...

HOW COMES I ALWAYS HAVE TO BE DRAGGED BY THE CAMEL?

The Akkadian Scorpion King Mathayus (Victor Webster) is back for part 4. This film is more akin to part 3 in that it is light and lends itself to camp and cliche instead of being a serious epic action film. Our warrior teams up with femme fatale Malina/ Sugarlove (Esmé Bianco) and her eccentric inventor father (Barry Bostwick) in order to find the legendary lost palace of Alcameda (?) while battling a rival king and his army, a dragon, and midgets. Feels like an Indian Jones film at times.

The film is anachronistic, borrows modern phrases, and even employs swagger music. In the beginning a guy not hiding his Brooklyn accent (Lou Ferrigno) says, "No one steals from me." I am not sure how much of this type of thing was intentional or not. In any case it was funny and entertaining, but it wasn't sustained...like in Part 3.

This is a film with no swearing, sex, or nudity. Suitable for the tweens.
