Plot summary

In Zenica, a giant steel factory belches toxic gasses into the air day and night, making the city one of the world’s most polluted, and people are dying. Samir Lemes and citizen activists from Eko Forum fight an uneven fight for change against the reckless corporation, the local politicians who focus on jobs, investments, and re-elections, and the EU who co-funds the corporation without enforcing laws and international standards. Instead, they name Zenica ‘A Green City Project’, building bicycle lanes in a city where breathing is a health hazard. A film about financial cynicism, political pragmatisk and greenwashing, in which West European countries play a surprisingly big role.

Outstanding documentary that shows politicians "tricks of the trade"

This engaging documentary takes place in Zenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and follows a group of activists from Eko Forum, a non-governmental organization dedicated to combating pollution in the city. Over the course of seven years, the film captures the community's efforts to enhance living conditions and address the detrimental impacts of pollution. The narrative is driven by the personal stories and insights of Zenica residents, members of Eko Forum, local and federal officials, and representatives from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).As highlighted by the citizens in the film, a significant source of pollution in Zenica stems from the operations of the ArcelorMittal steel plant, which included a coking plant until its closure in April 2024. It's worth noting that the documentary was filmed and finalized prior to this closure, with the information about it being added later. The film sheds light on the troubling dynamics between corrupt governments, European entities, and businesses that prioritize profit over the well-being of ordinary citizens in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The harsh reality is that workers and their families often suffer severe health consequences, including cancer, as a result of this negligence. With no proper monitoring of toxins and a government hesitant to jeopardize investments, the Mayor's comments reveal a troubling compromise: he feels he must cater to both sides, leaving little room for action. The conclusion is stark: the legislators are corrupt. One poignant remark encapsulates the frustration: "DO THEY THINK WE ARE IDIOTS? WHAT A PERFIDIOUS WAY TO EVADE RESPONSIBILITY!" Another concerned father aptly stated, "LET THEM POISON US WHEN WE KEEP QUIET."A must watch for everyone...
