Layered and subversive game of push and pull

From opening to closing shot, the film invites you to pay attention to what is going on. Told in layers of what seems like a simple plot of 'survival in the wilderness' turns into something more sinister and unsettling.Filled with subtle details and cool transitions, The Sticks throws in surprises that keep you guessing until the end.There are a few story elements that are a bit'wth did i just see' some of which I am still trying to understand, but they were not distracting from the overall feel or plot.The quality of special effects and acting are solid, the sound is balanced well and sound effects can be 'felt' if you know what I mean. The music theme fits the genre and pace well.The runtime feels just right and has a pace that goes from frantic to measured in just the right way without losing your attention.As a fan of horror films (my favorite genre) this definitely is a 'B movie', but the film utilizes resources well in moments that matter, and treats your time with respect.

Sluggishly paced and somewhat uneventful...

Given my love and fascination with all things horror, of course I opted to watch this 2025 movie, as I had the opportunity to do so. Sure, I had never even heard about the movie, and thus virtually had no idea what I was in for. So, in a sense, I suppose director Peter Kominek had every opportunity to entertain and impress me.Writers Shelby Cox-Dersch and Peter Kominek put together a fair enough script and storyline, though it was somewhat bordering on being boring, as there wasn't exactly a whole lot of interesting or exciting things going on to spruce up the narrative.I was not familiar with a single actor or actress on the cast list. It was a rather small cast ensemble, so the actors and actresses had to perform well in order to carry the movie, and I will say that the acting performances were fair.Would I recommend "The Sticks" to fans of the horror genre? No, not really. The movie is simply too sluggishly paced and mundane. Nor is it a movie that will ever grace my screen a second time.My rating of director Peter Kominek's 2025 horror movie "The Sticks" lands on a generous four out of ten stars.
