THE 14 is a long-forgotten slice of social drama that looks at the fortunes of no less than fourteen siblings who are required to fend for themselves when their mother (played by UK TV staple June Brown, aka Dot Cotton from EASTENDERS) is taken ill. The film has an interesting historical backdrop with the clearing of the slums taking a part, but the most interesting part of it lies in the efforts of the social services to deal with the situation. It's based on part on a true story.

I didn't think much of this film, I found it quite boring in fact. The main kids are quite annoying and only endearing in a couple of scenes. Jack Wild is fine, however. I think one of the problems is that I watched CAPTAIN FANTASTIC the day before and by comparison that film is very funny, interesting, and features likable characters. This one has an interesting situation and setting but lacks humour, warmth, and feels just a bit dull and overly chaotic.
