Plot summary

Filmed in French Polynesia with a Hawaiian cast, the story revolves around the adventures and romances of a young Polynesian boy as he grows up. As a child he raises and trains a baby shark as a pet, which he shares with his island playmate Diana. After a decade the three are reunited, but the world has changed: Tiko and Diana have become adults; the shark has become a dangerous man-eater; and civilization has encroached on the tropical island.

Flipper-esque

This was released in Australia in Oct 1964 on a double featurewith KISSIN COUSINS the Elvis Hillbilly musical. The duo did prettyfab biz because Elvis films were all the go here, and FLIPPER wasin release, and The Beatles feature HARD DAYS NIGHT was onevery other week. In fact these films basically alternated in cinemas everywhere, week after week. In between HOOTNANNYHOOT and BYE BYE BIRDIE we had a lovely time with all thesefilms...TIKO is a shark version of Flipper. Charming in a native JayNorth kinda way. Some cinemas also ran RHINO just to spice upthe international flavour. That is, if they weren't screening HATARI,or SAMMY GOING SOUTH.....all in release here at the same time. Ithink you could shuffle reels among all these films and still get thesame result. Great fun for 10 year olds. Did someone also sayFASTEST GUITAR ALIVE or THE OUTLAWS IS COMING too? maybe MAYA or even HOLD ON? TOBY TYLER? This seemed tobe the 1964 movie diet here.

One of the few films I loved as a child that I still love.

I hadn't seen this film in over twenty-five years. It had appeared (drastically cut) on the "CBS Children's Film Festival" in the seventies. I saw it again tonight. I had been searching for several years to find it on video. The film appeared uncut, but the colors were terribly faded. I was still mesmerized at the beauty of the film. Even my ten year old son mentioned how wonderful the music was. Sure there are some aspects of the story that are unbelievable, but it is a great fantasy. The actors who played Tiko (child and adult) are both very charismatic and probably deserve much of the credit (along with the music and cinematography) at the success of this film. Note: the dubbing job is less than stellar. Note: the CBS version deals mostly with Tiko as a child.
