Plot summary

Tarō Okamoto became world-famous by designing the “Tower of the Sun” at Expo ’70 in Osaka. The ideas and problems that came with its creation, however, are intertwined with the evolution of Japanese culture – from the Paleolithic up until modern times. In his documentary debut, director Kōsai Sekine takes us on a philosophical journey that transcends the visual limits of documentaries.

Very little about "Tower of the Sun"

The first 10-20 minutes has interesting parts about the Tower of the Sun. Blueprints, films of people around it, the exhibits inside, the design, the construction, how much work it was to build, etc. But, then it devolves into random politics. There's a section about the Fukushima incident. What does that have to do with The Tower of the Sun? The Tower of the Sun was made in 1970. It's creator, Toro Okamoto, died in 1996. That's 15 years after the creator passed away and 41 years after the Tower of the Sun, in other words, the Fukushima incident has absolutely nothing to do with the topic. The majority of this documentary are just taking heads spouting their own random opinions. It's also got these ridiculous vingettes like someone walking up to the tower and hugging it.
