This movie sucks, it was an absolute waste of time. I found myself asking "is it over yet" atleast five times. It wants to be a crime drama, a romance, a comedy, an action film, and a critique of race relations all at the same time and spectacularly fails at every attempt. It is hard to even tell that it was shot in Houston Texas because Little Saigon is barely featured at all. It has the feel of a late 80s Cannon/Charles Bronson movie, but with none of the campiness that makes those films tolerable. To top it off, Vietnam is in ASIA, not TEXAS. I think the director and writer could both use geography lessons.
Plot summary
A priest (Robert Ginty) learns that he fathered a child during his tour of duty in Vietnam and that the mother and child has relocated to Houston, Texas in the Little Saigon quarters. Searching for them, he also finds massive prejudice against the Vietnamese people, particularly among the fishing community in which they are trying to work. Setting out to right the wrongs, the priest tends to use more fisticuffs than friendly, priestly persuasion.

Slow burn, no pay off

I don't buy Exterminator Ginty as a priest. Especially one with a child and who kills.
This movie jumped on the whole "Vietnam war was bad" bandwagon way too late. It tried a few twists to shake up the story, but we still got the same old clichés.
Haing "Dith Pran" Ngor did his best with the material, but our Oscar winner wasn't shown to be that evil really. Unlikeable maybe..
And Tim Thomerson, as entertaining as he is to watch, is NOT much of an actor. And his alcoholic, bar-owner, vet character was the biggest cliché in the bunch.
And the ending? You have GOT to be kidding. Wrapped it all up in a nice bow in seconds.
I like Robert Ginty, but he should stick to the action flicks and lay off the drama. At least until he gets a good writer.
