Gorgo II

I read about this amusing trifle in David Flint's excellent blog "Desperate Living". Writer and publicist M. J. Simpson (this is his only screenplay) describes how he raised the money for the short film, which was shot by a large crew at Elstree studios in 2008. The comic conceit is that a forgotten department of the Ministry of Defence, consisting of two civil servants (Geoffrey Davies and Nicholas Amer), is still on the lookout for monsters and oversized animals as represented by the giant lizard in the film "Gorgo". An auditor (Kelly Eastwood) suspects that an administrative glitch has confused fact and fiction. I wonder how this will play to someone who's never seen "Gorgo"; but writing as one with fond memories of the 1961 monster movie, I found that Simpson worked through the ridiculous story with a splendid attention to detail. I hoped for a satisfactory conclusion. The punchline is delightfully unexpected and probably would have raised a big laugh at public screenings. Were there any? According to Simpson, "Waiting for Gorgo" did play festivals (at the time of writing not listed here). But it's now on Vimeo. Recommended.

Charming

I'm sure budgetary restraints kept them from having a great ending to the film but isn't that the problem with any genre that requires a big budget for special effects? I can't fault the writers for not coming up with a more satisfying ending; I couldn't come up with anything clever myself. I don't want spoil the ending because the film is worth watching. I've taken away 2 stars because of the ending.

This film does deliver an important message - the DMOA is alive and efficient, doing its job for the Department of Defense. Please, take 19 minutes and watch this salute to the DMOA and let's keep funding it.
