Plot summary

Early summer, Keiichi had just moved to a remote mountain village. As he becomes close friends with a group of girls, he was enjoying his life in the village. However when he starts to become suspicious that his friends may be deeply involved in successive murders that occur every summer, the situation around Keiichi gradually starts to turn into something more sinister.

Lacking important tropes and development

The important thing about the story in Higurashi is the characters. The tragedy and horror have no sting if you don't love the characters as people. I didn't care about the girls in the movie because they didn't really have any character, all of the aspects of their personalities were absolutely lost in translation to live action. This is likely just a writing problem. I didn't care for the acting for the character of Keiichi either. These kids are supposed to be intimately close friends that would do anything for each other. I get no sense of genuine affection between them. I was really disappointed because I wanted to care and just couldn't.
