Wish You Were Here? I Wish the Cast Had More to Work With.

If I'm for real, the writing ruins this film. The script felt like zero detail was put in; it left main characters extremely underdeveloped, mainly Adam. It truly felt like the writers gave more depth to the side characters rather than one of the main characters, in my opinion, which really throws off the balance of the film. The casting, on the other hand, was excellent. Isabelle Fuhrman as Charlotte was a lovely choice. Her performance was nothing short of Oscar worthy, given what she had to work with. Despite the lack of believable chemistry on Adam's side and horrendous pacing, you have no trouble believing Charlotte is head over heels in love.Gabby Kono Abdy as Helen was a great pick for the best friend role. Their dynamic was so sweet and they sold it well.Mena Massoud as Adam was okay. He's charismatic, and given the material, he did his best. But I didn't feel he put his full effort into building chemistry with Isabelle. Truthfully, bar his Aladdin performance, he doesn't seem like the best fit for romcoms. That being said, the writing really ruins his performance. There are little to no tender scenes between Adam and Charlotte, and the lack of loving scenes makes Adam come across as very manipulative and borderline abusive toward Charlotte, rather than truly in love. Whether that was on purpose or just a result of terrible pacing and directing, either way it truly affected how I viewed him throughout. His behavior feels emotionally charged, and without a resolution or apology for his behaviour it goes full throttle into toxicity rather than tragedy.I genuinely thought Jimmie Fails, who played Seth, would've done an excellent job as Adam. His performance had warmth and true feelings, and he felt more emotionally available than Adam ever did. But given the terrible pacing and lack of development, I'm not sure even he could have been seen as someone convincingly in love. So I can't pin it all on Mena. This movie isn't let down by the actresses and actors. It's let down by the directing and the script. In all honesty, I would give this movie a hard skip if you're looking for a convincing romcom. Would be a 3 out of 10 if it wasn't for the clear effort the actors and actresses put in throughout to make this anything more than a straight-to-DVD level movie.

A correct drama

Actress and now director Julia Stiles offers us a film with all the hallmarks of a melancholic drama, resulting in a well-crafted film that will please its audience without any major demands.A drama that loses strength in its drama. The film's opening is quite interesting and captivates the viewer. The well-presented characters, though somewhat corny, are effective, and they draw you into the story within. Once we enter the deeper drama, the film becomes somewhat bland and seeks sentimentality over the excellent work done at the beginning. Its story works; it's commonplace and we've seen it before, but it always brings good returns, and this is no exception. However, the film doesn't quite find its essence once we confront the sadness of the couple's drama. Perhaps it loses the emotion of a rather interesting character whose protagonist is the trigger to somewhat disconnect from all the interesting things we've been experiencing.Isabelle Fuhrman is everything in the film. The actress is the mainstay that makes the film work throughout its runtime. A well-chosen and satisfying performance from the actress allows us to grow fond of her character and, at times, identify with her in certain aspects. We find a couple of decent supporting characters and a not-overwhelming, but effective chemistry between the two leads, enough for us to believe this tale of love and the drama they face. The director knows how to make the most of her main star; not in vain, the director has experience in this genre as an actress. It delivers what it promises. It's a film that delivers exactly what it promises, no more, no less. If you're a fan of the genre, it'll be a film you'll enjoy, and if you're a more neutral audience, it's a film that will pass the time properly, but won't change your life at all. An interesting debut from the now director, where you can see a subtle flair for this type of film without disappointing in the least in terms of its staging.Conclusion.A drama that will make you cry. Excellent acting, excellent direction, and a script that delivers without much effort. For fans of the genre, this will be a pleasant pastime, and, after all, that's who the film is intended for.
