The film follows Okayo, aka Benten, a female Yakuza on the run from bounty hunters. Her back is emblazoned with a tattoo of the Buddhist Goddess of Love, and it is this canvas that her pursuers seek to claim. Okayo finds solace in the arms of Seigaku, a mysterious shakuhachi player.
With a runtime of just 75 minutes, the film is a concise yet chaotic blend of visual artistry and subversive content. The black-and-white cinematography is exquisite, with occasional color scenes adding a splash of extra impact. One notable scene depicts a couple engaged in passionate, protested sex, their bodies writhing and rolling amidst heavy curtains and mosquito netting. The use of dubbed-in moans adds a layer of eroticism that is signature to the pink film genre.
While the technical aspects of the film are commendable, the plot may leave some viewers wanting. The story feels jumbled and tedious in parts, particularly for those who are not accustomed to the unique style of pinku films. That being said, the film does deliver on its promise of lady power and revenge, with Okayo's character embodying a strong, rebellious spirit.
In conclusion, Women Hell Song: Shakuhachi Benten is a film that embraces the merging of sex and artistry. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it certainly leaves a lasting impression.
