Plot summary

Jack Morgan is a dog therapist, once famous for being able to read his dog's mind. Although Jack cannot read the minds of other dogs, he still operates a canine mind-reading business, without divulging his inability to customers. Mr. Mooney and his wife bring their dog to see Jack. Dissatisfied with Jack's inability to read his dog's mind, Mr. Mooney, who is a friend of the city mayor, threatens to have his business closed down. After the Mooneys leave, a wealthy man named Clyde Windsor brings his dog, Lucky, to see Jack, who is stunned by his ability to read the dog's mind. He seems worried by this fact and ends the session early. Before Windsor leaves, Jack informs him that Lucky is bothered by three individuals that live with him.

Ok for what it is

Wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Fun seeing so many recognizable actors like the guy that plays Q in Star Trek, Uncle Phil from Fresh Prince, and even just extras I've seen from Gilmore Girls, Friends, etc. Kirk Cameron did a good job portraying his character pretty believably. The premise is kind of dumb and the family members are very stereotypical rich snobs. Just a silly little Disney movie! Still only a 5/10 though which to me is "okay, but probably will not watch again". I saw a list ranking all the Disney Channel's Original movies starting in 1997 and this was the earliest one I could find on Disney +.

Talk about chewing the scenery

You Lucky Dog is the film where Kirk Cameron chews the scenery, literally. Something actors love to do in the figurative sense. Is this why he accepted this Disney film.Cameron plays a dog therapist because as a kid he could read the mind of a canine. But he grew out of it and then began just faking it to pay the rent. One fine day he gets a rich man Hansford Rowe as a client who dies thereafter. Because he liked Cameron and his dog Lucky liked Cameron he left his estate to the dog with Cameron as his guardian with Chelsea Noble as the lawyer for the estate.But he also has three worthless relatives who were cut out of the will, John DeLancie, Taylor Negron, and Christine Cavanaugh. They also have a lawyer whom jokes are made about in Granville Van Deusen.Cameron has bonded with Lucky so well that not only does he read his mind, but when he gets excited Cameron starts reverting to the canine himself. It's that behavior that Van Deusen is hoping to get the will overturned in a trial right out of Mister Deeds Goes To Town. You know how that went.You Lucky Dog gets over the top in many places, but it's still a decent enough film. I wonder why Kirk Cameron didn't continue with the Disney studio?
