The group

I'm not sure if it was the acting or something else, but the emotions felt off and rushed, in my opinion. After being kidnapped, having your friend drill into your ear, getting your mouth or tongue sliced, and having a finger cut off, I find it hard to believe someone would sit there laughing about being hungry for pizza. I understand the idea of embracing the moment and indulging in any remaining joy, but it seemed overly rushed. A victim's first day would likely be filled with panic, scattered thoughts, and perhaps a sliver of hope to escape. Instead, it felt like the characters had already accepted their grim reality, which wouldn't make sense on the first day, in my opinion.The plot had potential in some aspects, but inviting people who clearly dislike you to your family's private summer home seemed illogical. At one point, the character randomly starts screaming, and the light-skinned woman, who is supposed to hate him, listens and kisses the girl, even though she was meant to like the nice guy and act as some sort of moral compass.I liked the idea of the killer-a good-looking figure whose mask reveals a broken elderly man trying to piece together a distorted version of his past reality. However, the emotional interactions and timeline of events just didn't make sense to me. It felt rushed and more like a high-budget YouTube short film.

A pleasant surprise for blood lovers

DW Medoff directs his third feature film from a script by Joey Miller, who presents us with a spectacle that borrows elements from SAW and serial killer stories. A combination that results in a fitting film, full of blood to go around.Starring veteran Jackie Earle Haley, alongside Ella-Rae Smith, Jamie Flatters, David Angland, and Joelle Rae, four friends become trapped in a macabre game show, where they must face off against a twisted serial killer while racing against the clock. Every decision brings them closer to freedom or a terrifying fate.Your Host presents itself as a fun little diversion for those who enjoy gore and the horror of crazed killers. It's an entertaining and well-paced film that manages to pull through despite the script's minor snafus, which somewhat weaken the story. Nevertheless, Medoff's direction manages to hook you from the start, thanks to the excellent display of charisma from Jackie Earle Haley, who plays a deranged killer with a rather interesting backstory that wins you over.The film has an intention behind its motives, which may or may not work, but they manage to generate unease as we discover everything. It's a gore film in its very essence, and for true fans of this genre, it will be a true delight, as will all the suffering its protagonists endure.It's not perfect and loses some pacing midway through, but it manages to keep you engaged thanks to a captivating and charismatic villain who always leaves you waiting for his next move. A cast that performs well, accompanied by good and captivating photography.In conclusion...A little gem we occasionally find around. It possesses grace and intelligence to keep the viewer on edge, backed by a skillful direction that combines tension with bloody moments, evoking the early days of Jigsaw.

Nothing new here...

Without ever even as much as having heard about this 2025 horror movie titled "Your Host", I opted to watch it solely because it was a horror movie that I hadn't already seen.Writer Joey Miller delivered a script that felt-like something you would get from Wish, if you ordered a "Saw" movie there. It felt like a copy and paste job of the formula brought to success in the "Saw" franchise. So you're not in for anything innovative or new here. But hey, if you enjoy the "Saw" movies, then chances are that you will also enjoy "Your Host".The only familiar face on the cast list, for me at least, was actor Jackie Earle Haley. The acting performances in the movie were fair, but nothing outstanding.One thing that worked well enough in favor of the movie, was the special effects. Sure, it wasn't a movie that threw about an abundance of special effects. But whatever special effects were used certainly played out well enough.Watchable, sure, but hardly a gem in the horror cinema. Nor is it a movie that will ever grace my screen a second time.My rating of director DW Medoff's 2025 movie "Your Host" lands on a four out of ten stars.
