Trusting Lilith

According to legend, Lililth was a figure in the Bible who was booted out of the Garden of Eden long before the transgressions of Adam and Eve. True to her heritage, Lilith Jones of "The Single Mom Conspiracy" (a.k.a., "An Organized Killer") is the incarnation of evil. Much like the shenanigans of her biblical counterpart, the game of Lilith Jones is the destruction of happy families.

Lilith fixes her sights on the recently divorced Grace McGuire, who is refurbishing the old "moose lodge" eatery into an upscale, chic restaurant by the ocean. After a break-in at her home, Grace decides to take on a renter for added security. Without checking references, Grace rents a room to Lilith, who was the perpetrator who committed the break-in.

As Lilith worms her way into the lives of Grace and her teenage daughter Charlie, the essential shortcomings of the film emerge. Grace is far too gullible in trusting Lilith, and the brat daughter is duped as well. Both of Grace's friends, Jacklyn and Kristin, are suspicious of Lilith. But Grace inexplicably pays no heed to her friends.

At a time when she should have her guard up due to the break-in, Grace is preoccupied in a dalliance with a younger man named Alex, who is working for her at the restaurant. While there was good chemistry apparent in the relationship, appearances can be deceiving, especially when Grace's life starts to fall apart.

The filmmakers moved too abruptly to a grande finale when Lilith suddenly whips out a pistol and takes young Charlie hostage. It was also a bit of a stretch to see the transformation in the character of Grace's ex-husband James, who goes from being a seedy troublemaker to a Superman-like hero. The big fight scene turned into farce with the wild punches being thrown and bodies flying around the swimming pool.

The film held the audience's interest for ninety minutes due to the interesting characters and good performances. Lilith was the dynamo who served as the catalyst for the action. Her story about being an orphan who fell in love with her step-brother was perfectly in keeping with her neurotic sensibilities. By the end, she has escaped the long arm of the law, opening the possibility for a repeat performance in a sequel.

Weak start, strong finish

I liked it. Weak start, strong finish. The cast did a good job.

Allison McAtee's performance as Grace was good. The character was kind of scatty, almost narcissistic, but I liked her more as the film went on. Alex (Andrew Spach) seemed a bit wooden, but a nice guy. Evil Lilith was well-played by Samantha Cope, and there was clearly something going on between her & Alex from her first appearance. Grace was truly & horribly gullible. Her judgement was incredibly poor to allow so many new people into her family's life like that, and to have an affair with her employee like that.

Who has a stranger move into their home without checking references? And for someone financially well off and living with a teenager, why would you need a "roommate" for safety? Weird.

I liked the novel way Kristin was murdered, although I would have liked to see more of that character instead of killing her off. I also liked the other BF, Jaclyn (Triana Browne) and I'm glad she at least survived her attack. I saw Triana in a small role in another movie and found her performance interesting & memorable. She should be given lead roles in movies like this. ?? I'd definitely watch any film was to star in.

I also really liked Aubrey Steven's performance as Charlie. I thought she was going to portray a one-dimensional bratty child - instead she was really excellent & nuanced. She and Triana were my favourite things about this film.

The last 30 mins were good. And I liked the ending with the happy family reunited.
