Slow burn, decent atmosphere

This film is not a sleeper hit, but it's also not an incompetent mess. The prologue, with some children telling scary stories around a fire, starts things off with some appropriate dread. What I believe hacked a lot of viewers off is the whiplash like change from this great start to some sort of domestic drama about a family dealing with the father in a coma after an unexpected accident. In addition to this, the family has just purchased a farm and house that both date back several hundred years. While this element of the story humanizes the characters, it probably seems slow and draggy to some viewers. I personally thought the film makers did a decent job of integrating the family's troubles with the weird goings-on, which kicks into high gear when some bullies coerce the son into holding a seance with a Ouija board. I've seen enough episodes of "Ghost Adventures" to know that the psychic energy generated by extreme sorrow or trauma can make people vulnerable to spiritual infestations. That may be why the family, in particular the son, comes under attack. The film kicks into high gear after the revelation of spirits on the property, with burlap sack wearing ghosts in the dark and the appearance of a blind medium to reveal the reason for the haunting. A reasonably entertaining way to pass an evening.

Quality time ... not

The video quality will be a good indictator - you'll be able to tell that this is not a big budget movie. And maybe something you do not want to watch anyway. That will be up to you. Predictable and a few other flaws - quite a few to be honest. This still might be something for the hardcore horror fan out there.

Not easy to watch and/or follow this tries to make the best of a story that easy to follow if you were to put it nicely. Some shock effects work, there is a bit of nudity and the ending is not half as bad as I expected it to be. Still you can use your time better and do something more productive with it - I'm certain about that.

Resume for the Director

After watching this film, I see it less as a feature film, but more of a resume for the director, as he strives to get a job as a professional filmmaker.

This is undoubtedly a amateur/homemade production: the cast seems to outnumber the crew (with possibly some overlap) and the writer/director, James Crow, also credits himself as producer, cinematographer, editor, casting (big giveaway there) and lyric writer.

So as a resume, I say well done. You obviously have quite a bit of technical skill -- the horror scenes were generally well done and your framing wasn't bad (you didn't overdo it with the closeups, for example). I hope somebody in "the biz" notices and gives you a position as assistant or third-unit director on a future project.

As a film, however, it is less than stellar. The acting really is bad. As more than one reviewer has noted, the film is awash with over-acting (for example, the nurse warning our heroes not to get too optimistic about their father's recovery from a coma. Cringeworthy!) The lead actress isn't bad, but most of the others seem more like friends of the director than professional actors. The plot is a bit confused, and our director doesn't really help make some events less difficult to comprehend (especially the ending, as it seems blinking at the wrong time may make you miss something pivotal) . Dialogue is somewhat pointless too.

Some nicely done set pieces make some of this film watchable, but I really wouldn't recommend it as entertainment.
