Surprisingly good

I'm a fan of Christmas rom-coms and rom-coms in general, but I must honestly say that this movie surprised with how good it was, Honestly, I feared it might be a little cheesy, but it wasn't. It was a good, solid rom-com, with down-to-earth, relatable characters.

The premise is interesting. Making amends for "ghosting" people you've dated. I've never done anything so rude personally, but I can see how it might be pretty common in the modern world. We don't really hold it against Ellie, because she's quite likable otherwise, and we understand that she mainly does it because she's a commitment-phobe, something most of us can relate to. I thought the whole setup of this through the fortune teller was pretty weak, but hey, I guess she needed some motivation to try to make it right with all those ghosted guys.

The redemption tour to the previously ghosted was, of course, just a way to get Ellie to spend more time with Charlie, and that's really the relationship we care about. I thought this relationship was handled very well. The two seemed to have chemistry, and their verbal banter was always enjoyable. Plus they were both attractive enough to keep your attention. The relationship developed naturally, without any of the cringe dialog that you might see in a Hallmark film, or the typical forced romantic situations like standing under mistletoe.

The surprise reveal that Charlie is actually the mystery guy that she had the most regrets about ghosting, was kind of unbelievable. Oh sure, in these types of movies, we're expected to suspend disbelief when such an outrageous coincidence happens, and we're usually happy to do so. What I found hard to swallow was that the one big rejection that supposedly scarred Charlie for life, was this one ghosting, where he never even got to meet the girl that ghosted him. I don't know how they could have made it more believable without his outright knowing that the ghoster was Ellie, but they needed to do something to make it more realistic.

One thing I really liked was that the two main characters in this film were techies. As an engineer myself, it frustrates me that people in the tech fields are so underrepresented in rom-coms. Having two techies who were also good-looking and had decent social skills was an even bigger surprise. Normally, if a movie even deigns to have a tech person in the cast, they're usually a total nerd.

Overall, I found this movie quite entertaining and watchable. A nice surprise.

Ghosts of Christmas Past

"Ellie" (Annie Clark) isn't the nicest of souls. She has an habit of chatting with, or meeting, men - then ghosting them. With Christmas fast approaching, she feels a little adrift so heads to a psychic who tells her that she must make amends if she is ever to find real love for herself. So, armed with her mobile phone (this features as prominently as she does in this film) and her, handsome, tech-savvy pal from work "Charlie" (Dan Jeannotte) she sets about trying to apologise for her systemic rudeness over the years. These scenarios form the basis of the story, but the real tale is about the pair of them putting two and two together and, well, it's not rocket science. This is a perfectly watchable, equally forgettable, slice of seasonal slush that gives two B-listers a chance to show off their perfect teeth, deliver some cheesy lines and take us on a journey of self-discovery that leaves us in no doubt at all about what is going to happen at the end. You will not need any cerebral input for this, it is a feel-good, lightly comedic, drama that maybe, just maybe, points out just how thoughtless and ignorant people can be to those they meet online.
