Great concept, average execution

"Medical store se nirodh khareedna ek rashtriya samasya hai". The makers have taken this national problem and made a movie out of it. It was such a promising plot but Satram Ramani has not capitulated on the script. Yes there are some really funny moments but a good portion of the movie was predictable and straightforward. Even the ending could've been tighter.

We finally get to see Aparshakti Khurana in a lead role and he has done a good job. Pranutan Bahl was also good in her limited role. What works for the movie is the great supporting cast especially Abhishek Banerjee and Ashish Verma. Just hope to see them in more projects.

Watch it if you have nothing to do this weekend.

Strictly average.

Viewers need to keep in mind that this movie doesn't really intend to aim too high. 'Helmet' was made with a fairly simple screenplay and without any star actors, and the final product makes you feel that the creator's hearts were not entirely into the project, as it does come across as a very average film. The idea they took up is definitely praiseworthy, everything else is not. Small budget movies should be encouraged and supported, because they have to grapple with a lot more bottlenecks than other filmmakers, and despite that they often end up making better films than the popular directors who make big budget mainstream movies. But unfortunately this movie is not like that.

Usage of condoms is almost nonexistent in India, and our population is inching closer to that of China, who are leading the board right now. Sex is a basic need and natural desire of every human being and yet we don't have any kind of sex education in our country. We all do it but don't want to talk about it. So the premise of the film is good, but what they have created is something that comes across as half-baked and lacks the punch.

Every time Minus spoke, played by Ashish Verma, I felt like stopping the film. How on earth can someone think that it could make anyone laugh ? Every dialogue of 'Minus' was extremely irritating and made me regret watching this film. Thankfully after a while, the actor pretty much went silent, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered finishing this film. As far as acting is concerned, there was little to no scope for anyone to showcase their acting skills. Pranutan Bahl was technically the lead actress of the film but her role was nothing more than an extended cameo and even in that she was quite disappointing. Aparshakti Khurana and Abhishek Banerjee can do much better than what they have done in 'Helmet', especially Abhishek Banerjee, who I feel is a special talent but remains criminally underutilized.

Helmet calls itself a comedy film but doesn't really have a lot of humour in it to support this theory. There are a few jokes here and there, but that's about it. The content is light, but not really engaging. You can watch this movie while checking your phone, and that's not something which will make the writers feel proud of their work. The social commentary and messaging that they do in the film is good, but if only it was integrated into a better screenplay, and had some good dialogue delivery, then Helmet could have been a much better film.
