Cloris Leachman departs

Cloris Leachman's final film casts her as the grandmother of a drag queen. Phil Connell's "Jump, Darling" probably won't be the easiest movie to find - I rented it from a local video store (yes, they still exist) - but I recommend trying to find it. This understated but complex movie focuses both on the young man's life as a drag queen, but also on the grandmother's old age, and how these two relate to each other.

I understand that this is Connell's directorial debut. Well, I certainly hope that he keeps making movies. Films like this one are far more interesting than the latest movie whose plot is Tom Cruise narrowly avoiding all danger. By contrast, this movie creates a cerebral story without CGI or car chases or any of that crap. Just the plain stuff. Definitely try to see it.

Cloris Leachman was best part of the movie.

This movie didn't really pull me in. I was confused by a lot of the actions of the main character and there seemed to be no clear resolution or growth on his part. He didn't get up to perform at a drag show then for some reason left his husband to take a train from Toronto to the country to take his grandmas car (did he really need a car in Toronto? He wanted to be an actor not a salesperson or contractor). He decides to stay with his granma (which i hoped would turn into an exploration of their relationship. Nope.). He decides he wants to do drag so he goes to a bar where he's warmly received by the owner trying to create a little queer space in the middle of nowhere. They agree to him doing shows in exchange for drinks. Great. He's going to grow into a great drag performer. No. For some reason he stalks (cringe) the bar back then corners him until he agrees to go with him to the beach. A bit later we find out the bar back has a gf so he decides to embarrass him for no reason. It's not like he was tricked into something. But okay. Moving on we see scenes of a man at a window in nyc. Not sure what happened with that man. He lived in nyc then moved to Toronto? Moving on mom comes and we find out he's been "borrowing" money from granma to decorate and drink. Cringe. Again this would be the point where we delved into this more to see him grow. Nope. He move onto him deciding to leave grandma to go back to Toronto and beg for a job. He's always wanted to be an actor. Or drag queen. We wrap with him on stage with a cut away of granma with a glass of whiskey and a bunch of pills going to sleep. Please. I really don't think that she would do that ? Cringe if so.

On the other hand Cloris Leachman was amazing. She stole the show with her jokes and performances!

I love lgbt cinema but this one really missed the mark.
