Lies we Tell

Based somewhat on the classic nineteenth century novel Uncle Silas, it tells the story of Maud (Agnes O'Casey) who, when her father dies inherits a lot of money and the vast family estate of Knowl. However her uncle (David Wilmot), accompanied by his son, daughter and a strange French governess come to stay after he is appointed as her guardian. It soon becomes clear that uncle's eye is on the prize and despite Maud's sharp tongue, wit and strength of will she is unprepared for the lengths he will go to to take control of all she has.

I was surprised how powerful and shocking this film would be and indeed, in places quite hard to watch. Whilst it is not exactly an unheard of piece of history, the power a man / guardian would have over a young ward and what he can 'rightfully' get away with is extraordinary and allows for something not far off a horror / thriller that becomes unbearably tense. This is helped along by fabulous turns from O'Casey, centre stage throughout and Wilmot who you just want to throttle as soon as you see him. The ending is a rather neat and tidy and seems rather rushed, but this is a minor quibble in a neatly tense piece of work.

Good Enough

'' Lies We Tell '' is a period piece with a dark, gothic story.

The movie has an impressive cinematogaphy, with sharp and harsh light and minimal aesthetics, leaving everything to the characters to enhance the drama.

The story, in addition, was pretty intense and the family drama, though not unique, thrilling and dark. The twists were also nicely handled.

However, the ending was a bit rushed and if they wanted to present the main character as the monster which she had to become due to the family and that house, well, they probably needed more scenes to prove so.

But, the performances were really strong by everyone and, especially, the main lead.

Absolutely Amazing!

I have to say my husband told me about this movie. He said that it was period piece and thought maybe I would like it. Once this movie started I was completely hooked. The cinematography was stunning, music was so beautiful. I was honestly on the edge of my seat the whole time and talking to the screen ha.

The story was perfect and engaging. The actors all did an amazing job. I honestly have never seen any of them before (I don't believe). They were all fantastic in their roles. The main female was so good. I hope to see more stuff from her and the other actors too.

Highly recommend to everyone especially if you love period drama.
