Almost skipped this documentary. I'm definitely not a fan of a Trini Lopez, only liking a couple of songs he recorded and don't remember the last time I listened to any. Yet I found his story very compelling. Glad I watched.
Trini's story begins as an illegal Mexican immigrant. That part is relevant today as well. The climb in his career is really like a ladder. This movie shows that each step he made is like a rung up that ladder. Along his way while most entertainers of his time hid their ethnicity, Trini wore it proudly. Many biographies focus mainly on their professional lives. Here his personal life is alongside his professional career. It really gives a snapshot of the music business and society of the 1950's & 1960's which is the main focus.
There are bits of performances scattered throughout but except near the end, it's just bits. So if you are not a fan of his music, you won't get bored.
This was one of the better biography documentaries. Although the subject, Trini Lopez did have an interesting life and career. Definitely recommend watching. And no you don't have to be a fan of Trini's.
Plot summary
