Like the previous collaboration between Joe Swanberg and Greta Gerwig, 2007's Hannah Takes the Stairs, Nights and Weekends is easier to appreciate than it is to enjoy. Actually, I can't imagine many people enjoying it, in all honesty. I could similarly see some not really wanting to even appreciate it either, given how feel-bad and uncomfortable it is.
Lots of other movies with this kind of style and focus on flawed characters balance out uncomfortable drama with similarly uncomfortable comedy, but Nights and Weekends keeps things serious throughout. It's hard to watch, but there's a realism and uncompromising authenticity to certain scenes that I have to admire.

Watch it for Gretwig
The film is shot like a home made video, characters very realistic . The lead characters maintain a long distance relationship or try to , the film does not try to spice up moments . But there is one thing I would like to know.Is Joe Swanberg made to act bad as the script or is he a bad actor?, have not seen any of his films. If the first is true, as in the script defines his acting , then the film is plot less because a girl like Greta would not be thinking twice about holding a relationship with that character, even from 10 miles apart.Greta is vulnerable, with mood swings portrayed brilliantly as she always does, wonder the intimate scenes cold have been more passionate as they meet only after a while each time.
introducing two new faces
Mattie (Greta Gerwig) and James (Joe Swanberg) are a struggling loving couple in Chicago. They break up and a year later, he calls her out of the blue. He has attained some success and she lives in New York. He is the subject of a photo shoot and the photographer even brings her into the picture. They try to reignite their relationship.
This is a mumblecore indie. It's not that much written. The dialog is almost improvisational in its nature. The shooting style is strictly amateur indie. Swanberg plays it stiff initially as the foundational piece of the relationship. Gerwig brings an energy and charisma. Apparently, the film was shoot in two parts just like the on-screen relationship. There is a change in the characters especially Swanberg. He's more confident in the second part. This is a great introduction to two indie careers.
