A Rather Routine Romance

Jessica Summer (Danica McKellar) is a wedding planner who is very particular and detail-oriented. Adam Parker (Paul Greene) is an events planner who likes to think outside the box and live spontaneously. Naturally, when circumstances cause them to work together on the same event, we can expect them to rub each other the wrong way and to fall in love. This is a TV romcom after all.

But it helps if they have real chemistry and the transformation in their relationship seems not only plausible, but fated.

Unfortunately, McKellar and Greene demonstrate little heat. This has more to do with the script than with their performances.

Graham Verchere, who plays Jessica's son, Luke, benefits from some good lines and is very likable in his role. He's a classic film buff who likes to pepper his speech with references to old films like "Casablanca".

The story is predictable. Nevertheless, there is some pleasure to be derived from a resolution when everything falls into place.

Not a perfect match

'Perfect Match' is the first of the 2015 June Weddings Hallmark films. Am not a fan really of Hallmark's June Weddings film in general, there are definitely some surprisingly good ones out there but they are often too more of the same and have characters that are very difficult to like. Really did not care for the concept, which sounded really out of date and less than tasteful, but still saw 'Perfect Match' anyway as someone who is trying to see as many Hallmark films as possible and because of liking Paul Greene in other things (a bit up and down on Danica McKellar).

This is another Hallmark film from 2015 to not live up to its cute if hyperbolic title, 'Perfect Match' is a long way from a perfect match. The complete opposite pretty much. It is not an unwatchable film and there are things done well, but it does have a lot of the things that make me not care for too many of the June Weddings films and does absolutely nothing to make the concept more appealing. In fact, it pretty much makes it even less appealing which is no mean feat.

Of course there are things that are not done badly. Greene is very charming and likeable in his role, that his character is excessively immature when it comes to his attitude on marriage doesn't lie at his door and he does do a great job with letting the character grow and mature. Which he does and not in a rushed out of left field way. The other acting standout is Graham Verchere as the most likeable character, very cute and smart.

It does look quite good with some lovely scenery. The music is pleasant enough.

McKellar, in her first Hallmark film, however gives a performance that feels very hammy and neurotic and she never looks comfortable. Also found her character extremely annoying, one of the biggest examples of any Hallmark film seen recently to have negative character traits taken to extremes. The rest of the cast overact or go through the motions, even the usually charming Linda Gray doesn't seem to have her heart properly in it. Of all the characters, only Verchere's is properly likeable though Greene's does develop and becomes easier to like as he matures. All the others are outdated, arrogant and immature stereotypes reminiscent of the early 20th century but like in parody mode.

Really didn't like the concept, 'Perfect Match' does nothing to change my mind and instead reinforces it. The execution of the story is truly ridiculous to an insulting degree and too much of it left a bad taste in the mouth. It is also as more of the same plot wise as to be expected, yet does so without bringing anything new or even anything to it. No charm, no heart, no fun, no tension, no nothing. Just non stop sluggish predictability and implausibility. There is no chemistry between McKellar and Greene, who are also too mismatched in acting style and character personality. The script is sophomoric and like a really bad lazy spoof script. The direction is routine.

Concluding, not a mess but a lot of major problems here. 4/10.
