Rhapsody of trash

My husband and I really wanted to enjoy this and be supportive of an Australian film. Unfortunately the pacing of this movie was completely off. I think the script had potential, but some of the lines were just cheesy or weirdly inconsistent. Like the fact that the main character makes a point in 2 separate earlier scenes to say she doesn't drink. Then in the scene in her home she just happens to have a bottle of whiskey sitting on her coffee table with 2 glasses? Inconsistent facts like this pop up all through the movie- sometimes when it's seems to be revealing a truth (like the characters being supported by each other- it comes out bizarrely). Like the guy hearing someone upset in the stall next to him and he suddenly realizes it's his friend by very little cues and looks over into the other stall. So many bits in this that just weren't realistic and none of it came together. As for the direction in it- it seems like some of the stuff was also poorly directed- picking up papers from the floor- throw the basket out the door- don't finish picking up even though that was supposed to be lead in to the scene- who would have just left everything on the floor. I can go on- placement of the people in the staging of things- weirdly done. The acting was rough- so many awkward moments that people didn't have the right reactions. I wanted to like this, but it struck out. Strike one the inconsistency in the writing, strike two awkward directions and placement of actors, and strike three the acting was slow pacing and inappropriate reactions- sudden irritation or anger- no build up voices staying flat- not tone. Such a waste.

1st Asian Australian Rom-Com

We were one of the first to watch and rate this film.

The director obviously favoured the lead actress to allow her to add lib her dialogue in various places of this film and to keep re-casting her in all of her films. We would like to see the filmmaker/s cast the net more broadly, giving other Asian-Australian actors an opportunity to shine. This film has definitely been a stepping stone for the leads' careers.

Eye candy was undoubtedly the lead, Damien Sato and good performances from Lily Stewart and Tom Jackson were noted.

Having a diverse cast is a bonus element to this film.

We wondered why the director chose an Indian Producer to come on board when this is predominantly a Chinese-Vietnamese cast?

Representing contemporary Australia

It is refreshing to go to the cinema and watch a rom-com with such charm and character, and one that acknowledges and represents contemporary Australia in the storytelling. The story begins with a wedding, and follows the lives and loves of four very different couples. While the couples all face different challenges, their stories come together beautifully in Hopwood's script to present resolutions that are meaningful as well as happy. The movie is billed as the first Asian-Australian rom-com; it is the first Australian movie to have Asian-Australian leads. The challenges are not necessarily unique to Asian-Australians - we see the characters in relatable situations, and are drawn into their stories. I like that the story included a short film competition, the realities of living with anxiety, someone madly trying to finish their PhD and wanting to become a writer, and finding success with dreams of careers in the creative sector. Beautifully written and with great talent, I highly recommend it.
