Great archive footage and historic film and photographs of Liverpool and Hamburg and the Beatles. Soundbites from lots of folk who were there at the time and were, even if in a small way part of this essential story . Recommended .

Better than a lot of Beatles Documentaries
Great Insight
I enjoyed this. It captured the growth of Merseybeat from the dark days of skiffle up to the emergence of the world's greatest group. The stories of those who were there were interesting to listen to and I particular enjoyed the part regarding the Pete Best controversy. Perhaps there was more to his dismissal than I first thought. It would seem that the interference of Mrs Mona Best played a huge part in getting rid and, maybe, Brian Epstein was not quite as innocent as I had been led to believe. Whatever, I was pleased to hear that Pete got a decent pay off from the Anthology album, and credit to McCartney for that. It must have been a devastatingly tough time for such a young lad to be kicked out like that but Pete seems to have weathered the storm and it was gratifying to listen to his emotional summary of his life towards the end of the programme. By the way, I don't understand the earlier review complaining about the lack of subtitles. Being of a certain age myself I watched the whole programme whilst following the subtitles. All in all I thoroughly recommend this programme - an entertaining hour and a half.
The Beatles - by people who knew them
"Varying old British dialects" from white males. Are we supposed to reimagine the Beatles as transgenders from 2019?
If you want to understand the talent and resilience that made the Beatles what they were, you should watch this show. It is almost ethnographic in its method, albeit via a journalistic medium. Very well produced and quality of film and sound as good as the Ron Howard film, which was as much about the US as it was about the Beatles. This film is about Liverpool and its people. It contains lots of rarely aired information about the band, their background and their contemporaries..
