Celebrating the 100th anniversary of Orson Welles' birthday (also remembering on his 30th year of passing) TCM made an entry for the genius on the
"This is..." series and they did an outstanding summarized job on the life and work of the man behind "Citizen Kane", "The Magnificent Ambersons" and more.
For the cinephiles and admirers of Welles, this is a quite nice addition and one of the most recent made on him but it doesn't cover much about "The Other
Side of the Wind" and how Peter Bogdanovich was trying to build it all together as he inherited the piece from Welles; for the newcomers on the man's work
and legacy, it's a great material which presents a little about his films, a little from personal life coming from his daughter stories, and the admiration
he gets from younger filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese and Henry Jaglom (who directed Welles on three occasions).
It's very comprehensive on the man,
his highlights with "War of the Worlds" radio broadcast in 1938, the towering achievement of "Citizen Kane" (yes, one cannot escape this masterpiece and
its legendary making, there's plenty of discussions here), also the countless struggles he faced while developing other movies; and it doesn't exceed with anything.
Many bits from a known 1982 interview with Welles are
featured here - I think it's one of his last and he was so candid on those that many documentaries go back to that tape and present everything they can.
Plus, his sense of humor was just great. Now, it's time to catch up with some of his films that I have yet to see - specially "Chimes of Midnight", which he
considers his very best. 10/10.
